Stop using amalgam fillings

Amalgam fillings are still a topic of debate around the world

23 organisations from around the world have written a letter calling for a date for the phasing-out of mercury amalgam. The main reason for this letter is that many dental and other health groups believe that there is sufficient evidence that the mercury amalgam has not only adverse effects on people but that when it gets into the environment it causes further problems.

One example is the problems caused to the environment. According to an article the mercury is introduced to the environment via cremation, dental office air and water emissions, and human waste. The mercury then becomes more toxic, and effects sea creatures of which we then consume. Additionally poisonous mercury is especially dangerous for the developing brains of small children.

At Tewantin Dental Centre we do not use amalgam fillings…we safely remove them

At Tewantin Dental Centre we offer white fillings which are composite blend that matches your natural tooth-colour. We also offer the safe removal of your existing amalgam fillings. In previous blogs we have discussed the ongoing debate concerning whether or not amalgam fillings are really bad for you, and why amalgam fillings are considered dangerous to your health.

But at the end of the day the jury is still out…sort of, or to be more accurate it really does depend on the individual: in some instances doctors have recommended the complete removal of amalgam for health reasons. On the other hand, amalgam fillings have been a problem for others. Recently, a lady was suffering from vomiting, she had to have her gallbladder removed and it got to the point where she was basically an invalid. Eventually she discovered that she had mercury poisoning. It turned out she had over a dozen amalgam fillings and once they were removed and white fillings put in, her symptoms abated and once the mercury left her system she recovered.

The choice is yours…

At Tewantin Dental Centre the choice is ultimately yours. Amalgam fillings contain an alloy that is 50% mercury. Amalgam fillings are also an out-dated form of dentistry: white fillings are much less invasive than amalgam fillings as they do not cause any further damage to your tooth structure. White fillings additionally are an aesthetically pleasing option because they can be polished to match your natural tooth-colour.
